His Light Can Overcome the Darkness in Me

His Light Can Overcome the Darkness in Me

News flash: We live in a dark, broken world. There’s more than enough sickness and sorrow to go around. People I love are gravely ill. People I love are not saved. People I love are being beaten down by circumstances.

When the darkness is overwhelming around me, I remember that Jesus is the light.

John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

I cling to this verse and tell my mind and emotions that the truth is more powerful than what I’m feeling.

I’ve quoted this verse many times over many years, but today I saw the link between verse 4 and verse 5 in a way I hadn’t before.

John 1:4-5
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

In Jesus was life. That life was the light that darkness couldn’t overcome. Darkness couldn’t overcome the light of Jesus because it couldn’t overcome the life of Jesus. Just yesterday, we celebrated His resurrection, when darkness tried to defeat Him and failed.

I realize these scriptures are referring to spiritual darkness, but I have experienced His light overcoming mental and emotional darkness in my life as well.

John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Because I follow Jesus, I don’t just have His light inside me, I have His life inside me.

If the darkness of depression is overwhelming me, it surrounds me and it’s all I can see. But if I remember that I have the life and light of Jesus inside me, I can choose to look elsewhere.

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
   a light on my path.

I choose to look into God’s Word, because it will show me the light that I can’t see with my natural mind.

If God gave me His Word as a light for my path, that means He knew that the path was going to get dark. The darkness in my mind is not a surprise to God.

So I take His Word and I apply it to my path – my particular circumstances.

Psalm 34:19
The righteous person may have many troubles,
but the Lord delivers him from them all

Psalm 91:7
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.

Nahum 1:7
The Lord is good,
a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him

When the darkness around me and in my mind is so thick that it confuses me and I don’t even know what I need to pray for, I go to the light and life of God’s Word for clarity.

Psalm 119:130
The unfolding of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to the simple.

And when I still don’t understand what’s going on, I go to God’s Word and trust Him anyway.

Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding

Because I know that His light and life are powerful enough to take care of everything, whether I understand it or not.

Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
   whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

And for my loved ones who haven’t yet accepted His life into their hearts, I ask Him to send His light into their lives where they are. And I trust that He will send His light and they will see it.

Isaiah 9:2
The people walking in darkness
   have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
   a light has dawned.

Sometimes, the darkness is stronger than I am. But I don’t have to fight the darkness. I just have to focus my eyes and my heart on the light and life of Jesus and trust that He will fight the darkness. And He always does.

How has the light of God’s Word led you out of darkness?
